About Us

Ohio Stoneware
Zanesville, Ohio

Ohio Stoneware is a manufacturer of stoneware crocks, birdbaths, flowerpots, and pet feeders. All of our pieces are 100% American made. The process begins with processed clay. We use our own recipe of clay mixture to get just the right consistency. Once the clay has been mixed with water, it goes through the pug mill and is formed into snake like slugs. We cut the slugs according to the size of piece that we are making. Each piece is made on a forming press in a metal mold. Depending on the size of item we can make up to 1200 pieces of one item in a day! Once coming off of the press it is hand finished and moved to the dryer. Once it has dried, we hand spray each piece with glazing. All of our glazes are made on site and are made of recipes unique to us. After the piece is glazed, it's ready to be fired. We fire at approximately 2200 degrees Fahrenheit. The firing process takes about twelve hours from the time of lighting the kiln to the time we open the kiln. Once the kiln has been opened and the pieces have cooled, the finished pieces are stamped on the bottom with our name, inventoried and stocked.

Why was the business started?

Tiffany's family has been in the retail pottery business for nearly 50 years. In the spring of 2005 several of the local potteries announced that they were going out of business. With the thought that the local potteries were quickly dwindling, Ross & Tiffany with the support of both of their families started talking about buying the Zanesville location of Robinson Ransbottom. The Zanesville plant was much newer and very efficient in comparison to the others. The other key factor was Tom Drabik. He had been the plant manager since the plant's existence and agreed that if they could get it purchased, he would stay with them. With a lot of number crunching, meetings with bankers, and late nights spent figuring out how to make it work, the couple went to the auction in June and were successful at purchasing all of the equipment in the building as it sat. Later that week they settled with the owner of the building and closed the deal. On July 5, 2005 Ohio Stoneware was open for business. In the beginning they had three employees and manufactured roughly nine items. Their grand opening was celebrated during the Pottery Lovers Reunion on July 15, 2005.
